Southwest sees growth in the financial services sector

The south-west of the country – especially counties of Cork and Kerry – is confident of attracting more international financial services companies to the region in the coming years.

Growth is expected from the creation of new businesses and from existing businesses that encourage investment and increase their employment.

Around 3,500 people are currently employed in the financial services sector in the southwest. The growing areas of interest include asset management, fund administration and fintech.

About 40 international financial companies are based in the southwest.

Pointing out possibilities

At an event highlighting opportunities for the region, Cork Chamber CEO Conor Healy said skill availability was not an issue.

“Talent availability is high on the agenda in every conversation we have with companies today, and the financial services sector is no exception,” he said.

“In the southwest, the financial services industry is supported by a strong talent pipeline of highly qualified potential future employees from the two regional universities. UCC and Münster Technological University together have over 40,000 students and 2,000 graduates in economics or finance each year. “

There are currently 211 IDA customer companies in the southwest – from various industries – with more than 46,000 employees. The IDA has announced that it will aim for 118 investments for the Southwest region between this year and 2024.
